Walking

Walkers can enjoy an unrivalled choice of waymarked paths offering routes to suit every ability, from easier paths to more challenging long-distance routes. You can also enjoy a gentle stroll around one of the many unspoilt villages.

You can choose to walk from the door of Bramble Cottage down the public footpath that takes you through Bolehill and into Wirksworth. Alternatively turn right and walk around 100 meters up Oakerthorpe Road where you will find a public footpath that will take you along Barrel Edge then down to Black Rocks and then down to Cromford or onto the High Peak Trail. You can also walk down Oakerthorpe Road then under the railway bridge that takes you onto the High Peak Trail. There is a car park and refreshments kiosk situated at Black Rocks.

There are numerous other walking routes and destinations in the surrounding area, and you are welcome to use the walking books and guides available in the cottage. Middleton Top Countryside Centre is also a good starting point providing a range of books, guides, maps and advice to help walkers of all abilities.

Cycling

The High Peak Trail is an excellent cycling route and a range of bicycles can be hired at Middleton Top. Bicycles can also be hired at Carsington Water (01629 540478) which is also a good option for all abilities. For more adventurous cyclists there are many challenging routes and Middleton Top Countryside Centre have a range of books and guides available to this extent. If you have bikes, their are storage facilities at Bramble Cottage.


Water Sports

Carsington Water can help anyone looking to get out on the water, whether it’s hiring a rowing boat or canoe, windsurfing or kayaking, or to arrange courses or lessons in a range of water sports, from kayaking to powerboats.
